Protection categories for safety and work footwear

Footwear produced by PPO PP meets the requirements for personal protective equipment in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2016/425 of the European Parliament and of the Council and the relevant standard:

  • EN ISO 20345:2021 Personal protective equipment - Safety footwear (with a toe cap tested to withstand an impact of 200 J)

  • EN ISO 20347:2021 Personal protective equipment - Work footwear (without safety/protective toe cap)

In order to clearly identify the level of protection of the footwear, read the symbols on the tag inside the footwear and check their meaning below. An example of footwear marking is presented in the corresponding table. The marking indicates the norm according to which the footwear was made, the footwear category, the symbol for slip resistance and the symbols for additional properties, if the footwear has them.

Category S1P, S3, S5 and S7 safety footwear is fitted with a puncture resistant sole made of metal or textile. For footwear certified to EN ISO 20345:2022, the type of puncture protection can already be determined from the marking. Textile insoles are marked with an additional letter S or L - the absence of an additional letter means that the footwear has a puncture resistant steel sole. Example:

  • S3: Safety footwear with metal puncture protection

  • S3L: Safety footwear with non-metallic puncture protection according to standard requirements

  • S3S: Safety footwear with non-metallic puncture protection according to increased requirements

For textile puncture protection, the difference is the diameter of the test nail used to apply pressure to the sole. A smaller diameter nail (3.5 mm) generates more pressure and therefore puncture protection is higher (higher requirements) than for a larger diameter nail (basic requirements).

Footwear protecting against ESD effects

Footwear protecting against ESD effects meets the requirements of EN 61340-5-1:2017 for static electricity. Part 1: Protection of electronic equipment against static electricity. General requirements

ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) stands for electrostatic discharge - the equalisation of potential between two objects until electrical equilibrium occurs. Such discharge often occurs in a fraction of a second, mainly in the form of a spark or voltage arc.

Commonly, the effects of ESD are known to all. These include discharges on door handles, shooting or even sparking when taking off clothes made of synthetic fibres. Static electricity charging is a process whereby an electrical charge is generated as a result of contact and subsequent separation between two surfaces, which can ultimately cause damage to sensitive components (microprocessors, hard drives, etc.).

With the technical and technological development of companies, combined with the extreme precision of the equipment used and the operations performed, it is becoming necessary to protect production processes as much as possible. The control of unwanted electrostatic charge is playing an increasingly important role. More and more workers are in contact with electrostatically sensitive production processes, materials and work objects. With ESD footwear, users are prevented from becoming electrically charged, for example as a result of friction when walking on certain surfaces, and thus from harmful electrostatic discharges. In many cases, electrostatic discharge causes hidden defects that only become apparent after some time under specific conditions as a fault or interference.

The electrical resistance of the footwear according to EN 61340-5-1 is in the range 7.5 x 105 Ω and 3.5 x 107 Ω (0.75 M Ω to 35 M Ω).

ESD footwear should be used if it is necessary to prevent electrostatic charging of workers by dissipating charges. It is used in the electronics, computer and automotive industries, among others, to prevent damage by electrostatic discharge when assembling sensitive components. Furthermore, a growing number of chemical and pharmaceutical companies in hazardous areas are paying more attention to the safety offered by ESD footwear.
